FEEDBACK FROM ALICE MULLAY:

"The project organised by Chroma in Unst was highly successful. We were extremely grateful to Claire for her thoughtful planning and the school was involved from the outset. We were able to discuss the instruments which would be of most interest to the pupils ie. the French Horn is an instrument that most of our pupils have never heard live and Claire made a special effort to bring it to Shetland. The Chroma players also took great interest in how our school had developed the Odysseus project and were flexible, encouraging and had prepared in advance arrangements of compositions by pupils in our school. They also constructed a fantastic web site specifically for the Shetland visit which has given our pupils a real sense of ownership and connection to Chroma and to the Odysseus opera. The pupils have really enjoyed following the progress of the project and seeing their pictures, poems and photographs presented so professionally.

The morning workshops were excellent and the musicanship of a very high standard. The players presented their instruments in an interesting and informative way. They were able to demonstrate techniques to Standard Grade and Higher pupils which otherwise would have to be imagined from a CD or a book. As can be seen in the photographs, our pupils were completely entranced by their commited and communicative performances.

The afternoon workshop was a rare chance to bring together children from 3 different small schools and the activites were well chosen and really helped to the group to bond and have fun. The Chroma players used poetry written by our pupils to create a musical rap which gave them a real sense of achievement and confidence about their work. Everyone was actively involved, including staff who also thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

We would sincerely hope that Chroma will return in future and would be delighted to work with them again."
