feb 06: attentive children at the Norwich schools concert

Odyssey Blog : February 2006

27 February: by Claire

Stuart has been in touch with Kathy Hubbard at Shetland Arts Trust, and today we hear that we have a concert booked on Tuesday 28 March at the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick. Serious application of thinking caps to come up with programme that involves clarinet, violin, horn, harp, and possibly piano. There is a lovely Fantasie by Saint-Saëns for violin and harp that Marcus and Helen want to play, and there has already been a special request for Sea Eagle by Peter Maxwell Davies from the Fair Islanders.
We are participating in a concert on Fair Isle the weekend we are there, and may also do something at Andy Ross' Wind Dog Café before we leave too.

Whilst at home in Perpignan, working out the logistics of island hopping on Shetland 2000 miles away, I hear that my application to The Paul Hamlyn Foundation has been successful. Huge sigh of relief all round as Stuart and I contact the players and the teachers on Shetland to let them know the plan is definitely steaming ahead. Everyone involved very positive and enthusiastic, and looking forward to it enormously.
Our horn player Evgeny has been to Fair Isle before (as has Stuart) and can't wait to return - he reminds me he can play the piano too should it be required for any impromptu concerts (a strong possibility on these music-loving islands!)
Marcus (violin) has a concert in Nice the day after our last scheduled workshop on Unst, but with a bit of schedule shifting we reckon we can manage to get him south in time.
Our harpist Helen has a concert in Liverpool on the Saturday that means she can't do Fair Isle, but she can drive herself and the harp north after and meet us in Lerwick on Monday morning.
