Odyssey Blog - a journal of events 26 March: by Claire Sunday. I hear that various break out sessions involving lighthouses and Shetland vodka had kept some folk up till the small hours after the party in the Hall, but this did not stop Marcus and Evgeny from playing at the Kirk (Church) for service, (me again off with a sick note), which was very much appreciated by all those attending. I spend the day recovering from getting out of bed the day before, still not able to eat, and being ever more grateful for the kind ministrations of Anne and Barry. I couldn't have fallen into better arms than these very kind people, who have made me as comfortable as possible and removed all embarassment from being this sick whilst a guest in a stranger's house. Although this is not at all as I would have planned it, this experience is teaching me much about the generosity and care of the Fair Islers. Anne keeps telling me how everyone is concerned (this is now day 3 and no letup) and the whole island seems to be sending best wishes. However, not wanting to miss out on a classic island experience, I get up to go to the gathering at Lise and Ian's in the evening. All the host families are there, plus a few. Everyone has baked and cooked and brought their contributions along to the table. The house is warm and bright and festooned with creative pieces. There is laughter and fun and the children do skits for us as horses and get us to guess Cinderella. I give them my camera and they take some great silly pictures. We are fed, watered, entertained, face painted and generally offered the great gift of good company. We joke about not wanting to leave. (be careful what you wish for....!)
